Moving in New Close: what to know first
New Close is a couple of houses with their outbuildings, and the only way to them is the concrete track of New Close Lane. Scout Lane, which the van climbs from Holme Lane to reach it, is a tarmac lane about 3 metres wide; further along, one stretch becomes a rough way closed to vehicles. The van will load at the house if the yard allows, or at the top of the track if not, so send a photo of the track and the yard before the day.
Around New Close the other lanes are tracks too: Tyas Lane climbs on cobbles and patched tarmac, and Row Lane and the farm tracks near Cop Hill are private or unmade in places. On a hillside like this, wet weather and ice slow a loaded van, so plan a winter move for daylight and keep the date flexible if snow is forecast.
New Close: the local picture
New Close Lane is a concrete track about 2.5 metres wide that meets only Scout Lane, so the van goes in and comes back out the same way. Scout Lane itself changes character: part of it is a proper road, part a 3-metre track and one stretch is a path closed to motor vehicles, so the direction the van comes in matters. Merry Dale Bridge, a listed single stone arch of the late 18th or early 19th century, carries a track over the stream in Scout Wood.
Cop Hill, the next hamlet, is under 200 metres away, near the Rose and Crown pub. The old farms around it are listed: Cop Side is a farmhouse of 1766 built back to earth, Upper House Farm of 1757 is two cottages and a barn in one range, and Folly Farmhouse has a ball-and-stalk finial on its gable. Row Farm and Tyas House are close by as well.
How the van gets to New Close
From Bradford the suggested route runs down the M62 and west on the A640 New Hey Road, then by Pole Gate and Moor Side Lane to Heys Lane, down North Lane to Holme Lane, and along Scout Lane to the New Close turning, roughly 35 to 50 minutes in all by road.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in New Close
Why does my postcode put the pin somewhere else?
HD7 5XA covers New Close but is centred more than half a kilometre away, so a sat-nav pin can land on the wrong lane. Give the house name and mention New Close Lane off Scout Lane, and the driver will head for the lane rather than the postcode pin.
Will the van have to reverse down New Close Lane?
Possibly. The lane is a single concrete track with one way in and out, from Scout Lane, so unless there is room to turn at the houses the van backs in or out. Tell us whether your yard has space to turn a long van.
Can the van come along Scout Lane from either end?
No. One stretch of Scout Lane is a rough path closed to motor vehicles, so the van comes up from Holme Lane on the surfaced part. Mention this if a friend is driving a car behind the van, so they follow the same way.
