Off the hillside, up to the M62, and then it's simple
Weavers' cottages and long hillside terraces are the local speciality, and most have a flight of steps to the front door, no drive and a lane too narrow and too blind to turn a van with a 3.4m load in. So the first half hour is barrowing, not driving. Once we are down on the valley floor and up onto the motorway, a run to Manchester, Birmingham or London is genuinely straightforward, which is why the plan is made around the collection rather than the journey.
From there nothing changes hands. The same van that backed up Crosland Moor carries everything to the destination and the same driver unloads it into the property, with an arrival time agreed beforehand. That is the real difference from a national chain, which will consolidate a Kirklees load through a depot, hand it between vehicles and give you a delivery window rather than a delivery time.
What Huddersfield long distance & nationwide usually involves
- Steep setted lanes at Paddock, Golcar and Crosland Moor have blind bends and nowhere to turn a long van, so we pick the approach and the stopping point before the day
- The Albion Street and Bus Station multi-storeys have height barriers that rule out a Transit LWB, so a town-centre collection means an on-street loading bay or a surface car park
- Purpose-built student blocks around Queensgate have barrier-controlled service yards that must be booked, and they are under real pressure in June and September
- Villas at Edgerton and Birkby sit behind stone gateposts and long gravel drives too tight for a long van, so we load from Edgerton Road or Blacker Road and walk it in
- The van holds 3.4m by 1.3m by 1.7m, which is a flat or a small house; anything larger gets quoted from photos and a proper list rather than guessed at

If your street isn't listed it's almost certainly still covered, Huddersfield and the surrounding HD1-HD5, HD7-HD8 postcodes are all inside our normal working area.
Common Huddersfield runs
- Huddersfield to Londondown to the valley, up to the M62 and south; comfortably one day from an early start
- Huddersfield to Manchester or the North WestM62 west over the tops, close enough for a there-and-back in a day
- Bradford to Huddersfield, then Scotlandthe van comes down the A641 through Brighouse, loads, and heads north
What it costs
What drives the price is the distance, the size of the load and how long the hillside collection takes before the motorway part starts. There's no travel surcharge for coming to Huddersfield from Bradford, and you get the price before we set off, not after. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
Frequently asked questions: long distance & nationwide in Huddersfield
Can you get a van up to a terrace at Golcar or Paddock?
Usually to within a sensible barrow distance, not always to the door. The lanes are narrow, setted and blind, and reversing a long van back down one is not something to attempt on the day. Send the street name and we will work out the stopping point and the carry in advance.
I'm graduating and moving south. Is a van cheaper than sending boxes?
Often, once you count the things no parcel firm wants: a bike, a desk chair, an amp, a mattress. One trip takes the lot, loaded at your Huddersfield address and unloaded at the new one, rather than a dozen separate parcels arriving over a fortnight.
How much notice do you need for a nationwide run?
A week is ideal, and for June and September, when the student blocks turn over, as far ahead as you can manage. Shorter notice can often be worked out, but the further the destination, the more the day has to be planned around it.
