Along the hillside terraces at Paddock, Golcar, Milnsbridge and Crosland Moor there is no drive and usually a flight of stone steps up from the lane before you even reach the door. That dictates the whole pack. Boxes are filled to a weight one person can take down those steps with a hand free for the rail, which means books and tinned goods go into small doubles and duvets and lampshades go into the big ones. At the other end of town, the villas around Edgerton and Birkby sit behind stone gateposts and long gravel drives that a 3.4m load will not turn on, so the van stops on Edgerton Road or Blacker Road and the whole house is walked in.
