Moving in Blakestones: what to know first
Blakestones Road runs downhill past the houses, narrows to about 2.2 metres in places and turns into an unmade track at its far end, so a long van stopped outside a house closes the road until it moves. A move here goes fastest when everything is packed and waiting by the door before the van arrives, and when neighbours know the road will be shut for a while. Tell us your house number so the van stops at the right point first time.
Blakeholme Close is the short residential close beside the road; ask whether the van can turn in it or should reverse out to Holme Lane. Some homes around Blakestones are reached only by footpaths and stone steps, unlit and as narrow as a metre, between the road, the canal and the hillside. For one of those, count the steps and measure the narrowest gap before booking large furniture.
Blakestones: the local picture
Three listed buildings stand within about 60 metres. 15 and 16 Blakestones are a late 18th-century pair of cottages built as mirror images; 2 Blakestones is an early to mid 19th-century house of three storeys with a seven-light window on the ground floor; and the 18th-century barn next to number 5 has a catslide roof on one side. Blakeholme Close is the residential close alongside.
Blakestones Road is lit but has no footway and is only about 2.2 to 3.5 metres wide, so the van will be loading in the road itself. The school gate is about 60 metres off, and there is a small takeaway cafe nearby. Within about 150 metres are the railway, the canal and a pay car park with around 30 spaces.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Blakestones
We live next to the school. When is the best time to load?
Outside the school run, if you can. With no footway on Blakestones Road, a mid-morning, early afternoon or weekend slot keeps the van out of the way of parents. The van works 8am to 8pm, seven days a week.
Is Rotcher Lane a better way in than Blakestones Road?
No. Rotcher Lane has a 3.1-metre height limit, so the van comes along Holme Lane and Blakestones Road. That road is narrow, between about 2.2 and 3.5 metres, so loading happens in the road.
Is there anywhere to park nearby?
A pay car park of about 30 spaces is within about 150 metres, below the houses near the canal. Loading at the door is usually quicker, so send a photo of the frontage before booking.
