Moving in Lower Holme: what to know first
Lower Holme is a short string of houses, most of them old stone rows and cottages facing Holme Lane, so the van loads on the lane outside. Holme Lane is the road between Slaithwaite and the hamlets further west, used by neighbours and the school traffic, so the van will be in their way while it stands there. Have the boxes ready by the door and tell us the house number, so the stop is as short as it can be.
A few homes sit off the lane rather than on it: a narrow unlit tarmac lane about 2.9 metres wide, an access-only track and Follingworth Lane lead to them, and a couple of stepped footpaths climb between the levels. For one of those, say whether the van can drive down or should wait on Holme Lane. The 18th-century cottages have old doorways and stairs, so measure the larger pieces before the day.
Lower Holme: the local picture
Holme Lane is lined with listed stone houses. Numbers 1 to 3 are an early to mid 19th-century row, 14 and 15 date from the late 18th century, 25 from about 1800, and 26 to 29 are a mid 18th-century row of four cottages. The oldest piece is the barn beside 14, from the 17th century, with millstone grit quoins and an oak lintel over its doorway. Several have later extensions, so say which part of the house the big pieces are in.
The school on the doorstep is Slaithwaite Church of England Junior and Infant School, about 270 metres away, and there is a Royal Mail wall post box on the lane at Lower Holme. Follingworth Lane, a paved track, runs off nearby, and the line of a Roman road passes about 120 metres away. North Lane and Clough House Lane climb from here to Heys Lane, where the buses stop.
How the van gets to Lower Holme
The suggested route avoids the valley bottom: from the M62 it takes the A640 New Hey Road, then Pole Gate, Moor Side Lane and Heys Lane before coming down Clough House Lane and North Lane on to Holme Lane, roughly 35 to 45 minutes after leaving Bradford.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Lower Holme
Holme Lane, Lower Holme or Upper Holme: which should go on the booking?
The house number and Holme Lane, with the HD7 5 postcode. Lower and Upper Holme are only about 140 metres apart on the same lane, so the number is what tells the van which door to stop at.
Can a van get along Follingworth Lane?
It is a paved track only about 2.6 metres wide and unlit, so loading from Holme Lane is usually better. If your house is down Follingworth Lane, send a photo of the access.
Is Lower Holme part of Slaithwaite?
It is on Slaithwaite's western edge, under a mile from Carr Lane by Holme Lane, and in the Colne Valley West ward. Like Slaithwaite it is unparished, so Kirklees Council runs the services.
