Wilshaw: what to know before moving day
Much of what stands in Wilshaw was built as one group in the mid 19th century, and a good part of it is Grade II listed. St Mary's Church of 1862 to 1863 has the church at one end, a former Sunday school at the other and a tower over the vestibule between them, with its own boiler house and tall chimney. In the churchyard stands the octagonal mausoleum of Mary Beaumont, dated 1859.
The homes are just as distinctive. The Almshouses are three mirror-image pairs of 1871, each with a shared porch and two round-arched doors, so check which half is yours when you book. The 1873 school and schoolmaster's house became the village hall and a private house, and the Vicarage dates from 1831. Gill Birks, a stone farmhouse of the early 19th century, shares its name with the road beside it. Other addresses are on Lower Greave Road, The Avenue and Wilshaw Mill Road, and a listed K6 telephone box marks the corner of Lower Greave Road and Wilshaw Road.
How the van gets to Wilshaw
The B6107 is the road through the village. It leaves the A6024 in the Holme Valley, runs through Netherthong and carries on as Wilshaw Road to Meltham. From Bradford the van reaches the Holme Valley by way of Huddersfield; coming from the Meltham side instead, the B6108 Huddersfield Road runs into Meltham and the B6107 continues from there.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
