Netherthong: what to know before moving day
The old village is built round Towngate, the B6107 as it passes through, with All Saints' church of 1829 to 1830 at its centre and the Londis shop close by. The listed houses show how tightly it was built: 126 and 128 Town Gate are a pair of 18th-century back-to-backs, and there are listed stone houses on Outlane and St Ann's Square and a three-storey terrace on Dean Brook Road. Doorways and stairs in homes of that age can be narrow, so measure them before the day if a large wardrobe or sofa is going in.
Later housing spreads out from the old centre. The St Mary's estate, on St Mary's Road, Crescent, Avenue and Way, holds the former Wesleyan chapel, opened in 1771 as the first in the Huddersfield area and now a private house; John Wesley preached there in 1772. Denham Drive, Netherlea Drive and Giles Street are further addresses, and the primary school is close to the centre. The Clothiers is the village pub, and the Cricketers Arms, an early 18th-century listed building, is in neighbouring Deanhouse.
How the van gets to Netherthong
The B6107 is the only numbered road. It leaves the A6024 Huddersfield Road between Honley and Holmfirth and runs through the village under the names New Road, Towngate, West End and Moor Lane before heading on to Wilshaw and Meltham. From Bradford the van comes into the Holme Valley by way of Huddersfield and turns up the B6107.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Is Netherthong the same place as Upperthong?
No. They are separate villages with names from the same Old English word for a narrow strip of land: Upperthong sits on higher ground and Netherthong on the lower strip. Both are HD9 and in the Holme Valley parish, so give the village name as well as the street.
