Marketplace & eBay Collection in Holmfirth

The Holme valley is full of good second-hand furniture and short on ways of getting it out of the house. A very large number of properties here are reached only by a flight of stone steps or a stepped ginnel, with no vehicle access to the door at all. That carry is the job, and we price it honestly.

Steps, ginnels, and how far we have to carry it

Weavers' cottages here are stacked in tiers up the eastern side of the valley, many of them built back-to-earth so the rear ground floor is buried in the hillside and the only way in or out is the front. Two questions to the seller save everyone a wasted afternoon: how many steps are there from the road, and how wide is the ginnel? A photo taken from where a van could stop is better still.

Timing matters as much as access. The centre is a tight one-way pinch between Victoria Street, Hollowgate and Towngate, with narrow footways and vehicles routinely parked on the pavement, and visitor traffic fills the car parks from mid-morning at weekends and right through the summer. An early weekday slot is a genuinely different job from a Saturday lunchtime one, so we push for one where the seller allows it.

What Holmfirth marketplace & ebay collection usually involves

  • 20 miles and 40 to 50 minutes from Bradford: the A641 through Brighouse to Huddersfield, then the A616 and A6024 Woodhead Road up the valley through Honley, Brockholes and Thongsbridge
  • No Pennine crossing is involved, but the last few miles narrow and climb, so the time goes on the valley rather than the motorway
  • The lanes up to Upperthong, Netherthong, Hade Edge, Cartworth Moor and Holme are severely steep and narrow with drystone walls tight to the road and no turning space for a long van
  • Roadworks under the town centre access plan have been reshaping Huddersfield Road, Victoria Street, Towngate and Dunford Road, so we check what is open before we fix a time
  • The A6024 Woodhead Road is one of the first roads shut in snow, so winter collections above the town get a weather check the day before
  • Send the agreed cash with us and we hand it to the seller once the item has been checked, or settle with them in advance if they prefer

Where in Holmfirth we work

  • Hollowgate and Towngatethe one-way town-centre pinch, where there is barely room to hold a van still
  • Upperthong and Netherthonghillside cottages up steep narrow lanes, often with a stepped approach to the door
  • Thongsbridge and Honleyvalley-floor addresses on the way in, much easier loading and often collected on the same trip
  • Hinchliffe Mill and New Millterraces and cottages where the carry from the road decides the job
  • Mill conversions along the River Holmeapartments in old textile mills, so the stair flights and the door widths are what we ask about
  • Scholes and Wooldaleoutlying stone cottages with a growing ring of modern housing that is far easier to load from

If your street isn't listed it's almost certainly still covered, Holmfirth and the surrounding HD9 postcodes are all inside our normal working area.

Common Holmfirth runs

  • Holmfirth to Bradfordback down the valley to Huddersfield then the A641 through Brighouse, around 20 miles
  • Huddersfield to Holmfirthseven miles up the A616 and A6024, a frequent short collection
  • Honley or Brockholes to Upperthongthe classic valley-floor to hillside move, all within the Holme valley

What it costs

In this valley it is the carry and the loading window that set the price, not the mileage, so a long flight of steps costs more than an extra few miles. There's no travel surcharge for coming to Holmfirth from Bradford, and you get the price before we set off, not after. See how we quote for the full breakdown.

Frequently asked questions: marketplace & ebay collection in Holmfirth

The seller's cottage is up a set of stone steps. Can you still collect?

Yes, that is most of our work here. What we need to know is the number of steps, whether they turn, and how wide the gap is at the top. With that we can tell you whether it is a two-person carry and how long to allow, rather than discovering it with a wardrobe wedged in a ginnel.

Is a weekend collection possible in Holmfirth?

We work seven days, but weekends are the slowest day here. Visitor traffic fills the central car parks from mid-morning and the one-way system backs up, so a Saturday collection takes longer and costs more in time. An early start on a weekday is the better option if the seller can manage it.

How long will it take to get to me in Bradford?

Allow 40 to 50 minutes of driving each way, more if the valley is busy. The route is the A6024 and A616 down to Huddersfield then the A641 through Brighouse, entirely on this side of the Pennines. The extra time usually goes on getting the item out of the house rather than on the road.
