Thongsbridge: what to know before moving day
Thongsbridge grew in the early Industrial Revolution because the valley floor suited water-powered textile mills, and the valley floor is also where the floods hit: the Holmfirth Flood of 1852 swept away houses and part of the mill here. The old mill buildings now hold the Thongbridge Mills Business Centre and the Holme Valley Black Belt Academy. The cricket club, founded in 1860, shares the valley bottom with the tennis and bowling clubs.
Heys Road has the oldest housing: No. 11 and the terrace at Nos. 29 to 37 are late 18th-century stone houses, both Grade II listed. Holmfirth High School and its bus station sit right by Heys Road, so say if your door is near the school gates. Newer streets include Meadow View, Mill Race Fold, The Bridges, Longlands Bank and the roads of the Woodlands estate, such as Woodlands Avenue, Larch Avenue and Lime Avenue. St Andrew's is the village church.
How the van gets to Thongsbridge
Three main roads meet around Thongsbridge. The A616 comes up from Huddersfield through Brockholes and passes through the village towards New Mill, the A635 New Mill Road runs between Holmfirth and New Mill a couple of hundred yards from Heys Road, with a listed milepost beside it, and the A6024 Huddersfield Road is about a quarter of a mile away. From Bradford the van comes by way of Huddersfield and the A616.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Thongsbridge: questions before you book
Does Thongsbridge still have a railway station?
No. It had one on the branch from Brockholes to Holmfirth, which lost its passenger trains in 1959 and closed to goods in 1965, and most of the goods yard and trackbed have since been built on. The nearest trains now are at Brockholes, on the Penistone Line to Huddersfield and Sheffield.
