Moving in South Crosland: what to know first
South Crosland is a small village of a few dozen houses with their barns and outbuildings, most of them on Midway, Church Lane and School Hill. These are quiet village lanes rather than through roads, so a long van can usually stop beside the house for the loading. Many homes are 18th-century stone houses joined to barns, where the front door may be the only practical way in. Tell us which door to use and whether there is a yard or a gateway the van can pull into.
The farm lanes are rougher. James Lane is a track about 3 metres wide, partly concrete and partly compacted earth, and part of it is private for vehicles; Turbid Lane is a narrow dirt track in poor condition, and Far Fields Lane is a track too. If your home is on one of them, send a photo of the surface. Huddersfield Road, the B6108 below the village, is a 50 mph road, so the van loads in the village and not on it.
South Crosland: the local picture
Midway is lined with listed 18th-century buildings. No. 40 is a house and barn in one range, the barn with an elliptical arch and round-headed loft windows; Nos. 41 and 43 are a pair; Nos. 46 to 50 share a porch with round windows and benches inside; and Nos. 52 and 54 are another pair. Green Fold Farmhouse, dated 1776, has pigeon holes in its barn gable, and the barn at Pond Farm faces the road. Where a house shares a range with a barn, check door and stair sizes before the day.
At Crab Tree Well, a drinking trough of five stone troughs joined by cast-iron pipes and a dry-stone pinfold are both listed. Holy Trinity Church was built in 1827 to 1830 to designs by Peter Atkinson junior, with a pinnacled west tower, and the National School of 1835 and a School House of 1762 are nearby. In 1931 the urban district had 2,985 people. Dean Wood is about 170 metres away.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in South Crosland
My house on Midway used to be a barn. Anything to prepare?
Measure the main doorway and any stairs, because converted barns often have openings that were never made for furniture. Several Midway barns, such as the one at No. 40, are listed buildings. Send the sizes with your list and the carry is planned first.
Is South Crosland part of Netherton?
Not historically. South Crosland was a township of Almondbury parish, a civil parish from 1866 and an urban district from 1894 until 1938, when it was split between Huddersfield, Meltham and Holmfirth. Today the village and Netherton share the Netherton & Newsome ward of Kirklees and the HD4 postcode.
Can the van get down James Lane or Turbid Lane?
Not always. James Lane is a 3-metre track, partly private for vehicles, and Turbid Lane is a rough dirt track. Send a photo of the lane and your gateway, and if the van has to stop at the lane end the carry is priced in first.
