Moving in Booth Bank: what to know first
Booth Bank is one row of about ten stone cottages, and every move here starts with the lane. White Hill climbs from West Slaithwaite Road to the row, and Booth Bank itself is a narrow lane shared with walkers on the public footpath. The van stops where White Hill meets the row and the furniture goes along on foot, so tell us your house number and how far along the row it is.
The cottages are listed two-storey stone houses of the 18th and early 19th centuries, with mullioned windows. Wide sofas, tall wardrobes and bed frames are the items to measure before the day; flat-pack furniture and beds can be taken apart for the carry. Walkers use the lane, so keep a clear way past the van while it is loading, and plan winter moves for daylight, as the paths around the row are unlit.
Booth Bank: the local picture
Almost every house on the row is on the National Heritage List. Numbers 12 and 13 and 14 and 15 are pairs from the middle to late 18th century, 1 and 8 to 10 are late 18th century, and 7, the end house, is early 19th century with a modern brick extension. All are two storeys of stone under stone slate, with mullioned windows, and 14 and 15 keep a nine-light window across the upper floor. Before moving a wide sofa or wardrobe into a cottage of this age, measure the front door and the turn of the stairs.
The lane is small. Booth Bank is a minor road that doubles as a public footpath, and Shawfields Lane, which leaves it downhill towards Shaw Fields Farm, is only about 2 metres wide. About 200 metres downhill the Huddersfield railway line crosses the hillside on a run of bridges, with the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and locks 28E to 30E below that, and Zapato Brewing's taproom is about 400 metres away on West Slaithwaite Road.
How the van gets to Booth Bank
Roughly 35 to 50 minutes from Bradford. The suggested route leaves the M62 for the A640 New Hey Road over the tops, drops into Slaithwaite by Britannia Road and Ned Lane, follows the A62 Manchester Road west for about 1.6 km, then climbs West Slaithwaite Road and White Hill to the row.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
