Moving in Booth (Colne Valley West): what to know first
Booth is a few dozen buildings on the slope between the canal and the A62: short rows such as Bank Bottom Terrace and Old Bank Bottom, a handful of houses on Park Gate Road, and older farm buildings like Paddock. Several homes are reached by private drives or by narrow stepped paths from the lane, some of them less than a metre wide, so the last part of the carry may be on foot. Say whether your door is above or below the lane and how many steps lie between.
Down in the valley the A62 is a 40 mph road with nowhere for a van to wait, so loading happens up in the lanes. Which lane depends on your side of the canal and railway, so put the house name with the postcode and, if you can, a photo of the spot where a car usually stops. On a wet or icy day the steep lanes are slow going for a loaded van, so leave time in the plan.
Booth (Colne Valley West): the local picture
Booth's Bridge, numbered 52 on the canal, is a listed single round arch in stone built between 1794 and 1798. Its surface is setts, it is about 2.6 metres wide and it doubles as a public footpath. Locks 30E and 31E lie either side, with the towpath alongside, and the Huddersfield railway line crosses on bridges about 130 metres away, with the River Colne just beyond. About 240 metres off, the listed farmhouse and barn called Paddock, of the late 18th century, has its ground floor built back to earth.
The lanes are very narrow. Kettle Lane is between 2.2 and 2.8 metres wide and partly unsurfaced, Marsden Lane is about 2.4 metres and Old Bank Bottom about 2.9. Park Gate Road and Crow Trees Road complete the network. Before booking, measure how far your door is from where a van can stop, since some of these lanes will not take one.
