Moving in High Farnhill: what to know first
High Farnhill is the top end of a village that backs onto the moor, so moves here are uphill of the canal and the main road. The way up from the A629 is Cononley Lane and then Main Street, which crosses the Leeds and Liverpool Canal on Hamblethorpe Swing Bridge, bridge 183A, and passes the Kildwick & Farnhill Institute and Farnhill Methodist Church. Crag Lane, an unclassified lane over the hill to Low Bradley, is the other way in.
The buildings at the top are detached stone houses and old farm buildings rather than terraces, and some are reached through gates or yards. Say whether the van can get into the yard and turn there, because backing a loaded van down a lane is slow and best avoided.
High Farnhill: the local picture
The listed buildings at this end of the village are farm buildings. The long barn at Farnhill Hall Farm, dated 1835 and listed, has ball finials on its coped gables, and Crag Top Farmhouse, from the late 17th or early 18th century, stands a few hundred metres to the east. Farnhill Hall itself is close by to the south-west.
Above the houses is open moor, with Alexander Stone, Hardacre Cote barn and the old Hardacre and Low Delf quarries. None of those are addresses, so for a house up here give the house name and whether it is on Main Street or Crag Lane, and send a photo if the drive is steep or unsurfaced.
How the van gets to High Farnhill
Two roads serve High Farnhill. From the A629 Skipton Road, turn in at Cononley Lane and follow Main Street up through the village; from Bradford that is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. Crag Lane is the other route, an unclassified lane of about a kilometre running north over the hill to Low Bradley, handy when the van is coming from the Skipton side.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in High Farnhill
Crag Lane addresses sometimes show Low Bradley. Which village am I in?
The lane runs between the two, so map searches can label it either way. BD20 9BS, at the Farnhill end, is in Farnhill parish; check your postcode and give it in full so the van comes up the right end of the lane.
Which church and school serve Farnhill?
Farnhill shares them with Kildwick across the canal: St Andrew's Church and the primary school beside it. On the Farnhill side there is the Methodist church and the Kildwick & Farnhill Institute, both useful landmarks when describing the way up.
Farnhill was in the West Riding. Who collects the bins at High Farnhill now?
North Yorkshire Council, since Craven District was abolished in 2023. The parish is Farnhill, with its own parish council, and the ward is Aire Valley; before 1974 the village was in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
