Farnhill: what to know before moving day
The canal runs right through the village, and two of its listed structures affect how a van gets about. Farnhill Bridge, built around 1770 to 1773, carries Main Street over the canal on a single stone arch, and a canal aqueduct of about 1774 carries the water over Newby Road, so Newby Road passes through a tunnel under the canal. If your address is on Newby Road or near the bridge, mention it so the approach can be planned from the right end.
The older houses are stone. 15, 17 and 19 Newby Road are two late 17th-century cottages and a former shop, Stonegate Cottage and The Mullions are listed houses of the 17th and early 18th centuries, and an old milestone at the corner of Main Street and Grange Road gives the distances to Skipton and Keighley. The later streets include Starkey Lane, High Croft Way, The Crofts, Mary Street and Hanover Street, with the Methodist church and the Kildwick and Farnhill Institute beside Main Street. South of the village is Farnhill Hall, a Grade I listed fortified manor house dating from the 15th century.
How the van gets to Farnhill
Main Street runs through Farnhill from the Kildwick end, where it meets Main Road near the canal, to the A629 Skipton Road at the junction with Cononley Lane. The A629 bypasses both Farnhill and Kildwick, so from Bradford the van leaves it for the village rather than driving through. Grange Road and Starkey Lane lead off Main Street to the upper houses.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
