Brunthwaite: what to know before moving day
Brunthwaite was a small manor from Saxon times, and the name first appears in writing, as Bronthweyt, in the 14th century. The oldest buildings standing today come from an 18th-century farming community. Sycamore House and its barn date from the second quarter of the 18th century, with a doorway that rises into a false ogee lintel and a barn with a segmental-arched cart entry. Ashwell House, with its barn and stables, is dated 1739 and has a Tudor-arched main doorway.
Both are listed buildings inside the conservation area, so plan for furniture to go through the doors and up the stairs as they are, and measure them before the day rather than on it. Swartha Wood borders the hamlet, and Brunthwaite Beck runs close by.
How the van gets to Brunthwaite
Brunthwaite Lane is the road in from Silsden. It leaves Hawber Lane on the eastern edge of the town, and Hawber Lane itself is reached from Howden Road; beyond the hamlet the lane runs on, unlit, towards Light Bank Lane. From Bradford that means the A650 to Keighley, the A629 to Steeton and the A6034 over the Aire into Silsden first. The driver needs the house name as well as the postcode, and a note of where the van can turn.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
