Moving in Damems: what to know first
Damems is two places in one. Up the hill are the Bracken Bank estate streets, Central Avenue, Central Drive and Bracken Bank Avenue among them, with pavements on both sides and room for the van at the kerb. Bracken Bank Crescent is one-way, so say if you are on it and the driver will come in from the right end. Damems Lane drops from the estate at 30 mph past rows of semis, and the ones at BD22 7AQ are three storeys, which means an extra flight to carry.
Lower down, Damems Lane stops being a street and becomes a track where cars are discouraged, running to the station and its level crossing, whose gates are worked from the signal box. The van does not go down there or wait at the crossing, so if your home is beyond the end of the tarmac, tell us how far and the last stretch can be done with the trolley. Worth Valley Primary School is close by, so avoid the school run if you can.
Damems: the local picture
A mill made the village. The Roper family of Rushy Hall had a cotton mill built around 1780, straddling the River Worth; it turned to worsted after 1824, saw a weavers' strike over power looms in 1852, burned in 1874 and 1878 and was rebuilt, and was sold to Salts (Saltaire) Ltd in 1934. Damems Farmhouse and its cottages, 17th century and later, are listed.
The station opened in 1867, closed in 1949 and reopened with the heritage line in 1968, and its level crossing is worked from a gate box brought from Earby. Newer homes fill Damems Lane, Phoenix Pastures, Pepper Hill Lea and Rushy Fall Meadow, while Goose Cote Lane and Greystones Drive link up to the estate above.
How the van gets to Damems
From Bradford the van runs up the A650 into Keighley, crosses town on the A6035 and South Street, and reaches Bracken Bank by Queen's Road and Ingrow Lane. It then follows Bracken Bank Avenue for just under a kilometre to the Damems end, where Damems Lane, a 30 mph road, heads down to the railway.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Damems
Damems, Dam Elms or Dam Ems: which should I write?
Damems. The other two spellings were in use until the mid-19th century, but the station, the lane and the modern addresses all say Damems, so write that with the BD22 7 postcode.
Can the van drive down to Damems station?
No, it stops where the tarmac ends. The lower part of Damems Lane is a track where cars are discouraged, and the level crossing at the station is gated and worked from the signal box, so a house down there is loaded with the trolley from the end of the street.
Are the houses on Damems Lane two or three storeys?
Both. The semis at BD22 7AP are two storeys, while those at BD22 7AQ have three, and a few houses further along are terraced. Say which floor the bedrooms are on so the carrying time is right in the fixed price.
