Sowerby: what to know before moving day
Towngate is the main street, with Stocks Lane, King Street, Queen Street, Rooley Lane and Dob Lane around it. Much of the old town is listed: 52 and 54 Towngate, of 1662, is Grade II*, Sowerby Hall of 1646 and The Royd of 1632 are now divided into homes, and Castle Hill is a 16th-century timber-framed house cased in stone. Excavations on Castle Hill in the early 1900s found the foundations of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle.
St Peter's Church, built 1761 to 1766 in Classical style by the Stansfeld family of Field House, is Grade I listed. Trinity Academy St Peter's, the community centre, the Church Stile Inn and the Rushcart Inn are near it, and Ryburn Valley High School is on St Peter's Avenue. Residential roads include Broadway, Greenfields and Newlands Avenue, and Tillotson Avenue at the lower end of town is named after John Tillotson, the Sowerby-born Archbishop of Canterbury.
How the van gets to Sowerby
Sowerby New Road runs from the streets of Sowerby Bridge up to Stocks Lane, which leads into Towngate. Fore Lane and Haugh End Lane link Sowerby with Jerry Lane on the A58. From Bradford the van comes through Halifax to Sowerby Bridge first.
