Moving in Cotton Stones: what to know first
Cotton Stones is a church, a pub and a few houses and farms on the lanes west of Mill Bank, and every road here is a narrow lane. Alma Lane is about 4.3 metres wide, Lumb Lane 3.9 metres wide and Mill Bank Road 3.7 metres wide, the last two with 20 mph limits, while Clough Bank Lane is a track and Deep Lane a service road.
With lanes that tight, the van stops in a yard, a drive or the widest stretch near the door, and loading is kept short so the lane is not blocked for long. The Alma Inn's car park, with 45 spaces, is for its customers, so do not count on it for moving day.
Cotton Stones: the local picture
St Mary's Church, Cottonstones, was built in 1845-46 in Early English style, with a west steeple carrying a broach spire, lancet windows along the nave and a pinnacle at each corner; it is Grade II listed and stands in its own graveyard. Salt Drake crosses Lumb Clough on Salt Drake Bridge close by.
The older buildings round about are mostly farms. Upper Lumb Farmhouse and Cottage date from the early to mid 17th century, with a barn of about 1800 to the east, and Otter Lee, on Otter Lee Lane, is a house and barn now made into one home, with the old round-arched cart entry still in its front. Kennel Lane, Deep Lane and Alma Lane complete the handful of roads.
How the van gets to Cotton Stones
Mill Bank Road leads up from Mill Bank to Lumb Lane, which meets Alma Lane, and Alma Lane runs past the Alma Inn to Salt Drake and Clay Pits Lane. Alma Lane is only about 4.3 metres wide, which leaves little room for passing. The drive from Bradford, by Halifax and the A58 through Sowerby Bridge, is roughly 40 to 50 minutes.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Cotton Stones
Which parish and council does Cotton Stones come under?
Calderdale Council, and no parish: HX6 3EU at the hamlet is in unparished Calderdale, but HX6 3ES, a couple of hundred metres away, falls in Ripponden parish, so the line runs very close. For the move itself it makes no difference: both are Calderdale addresses in the Ryburn ward.
Can two vehicles pass on Alma Lane?
Only with care. Alma Lane is about 4.3 metres wide and Lumb Lane about 3.9, so a parked van leaves little room. We keep the van off the lane where a yard or drive allows and keep loading on the lane brief.
Is it Cotton Stones or Cottonstones?
Both are used. The listed church is St Mary's Church, Cottonstones, written as one word, while the hamlet is usually written Cotton Stones. Either reaches the same few houses on Salt Drake.
