Moving in Lighthazles: what to know first
Lighthazles is a scatter of old stone farmhouses and a few newer houses on high ground between Ripponden and Cotton Stones, reached only by minor lanes: Lighthazles Road, Eccles Parlour, Wicking Lane, Blackshaw Clough Road and Clay Pits Lane. Gough Lane and Water Green Lane are service roads and Hall Lane is a bridleway, so not every lane is open to the van.
The lanes are narrow: nearby Lumb Lane is about 3.9 metres wide and Alma Lane about 4.3 metres wide, which leaves no room to pass a parked van. Buses stop on Lighthazles Road and Lighthazles Chapel Road, and those stops are useful markers when you describe where your drive or yard begins.
Lighthazles: the local picture
The best-known house is Clay House, dated 1662 and remodelled in 1915, with a gabled porch, a Tudor-arched doorway and a cross window. Its listed gateway of 1690 is a segmental stone arch, and the wall beside it belongs to an older house now joined to a farm building. Lower Clay Pits, dated 1625, and its barn of 1657, are a little further along, as is Thirst House, a late 17th-century stone house.
Two of the old houses have lower ranges at the back: Lower Clay Pits has a single-storey rear aisle and an outshut, and Thirst House a single-storey aisle behind. If your home has one, measure the back door as well as the front before a large sofa or wardrobe is booked in.
How the van gets to Lighthazles
Lighthazles Road is the spine. At one end it meets Clay Pits Lane, which runs to Salt Drake and Alma Lane at Cotton Stones; at the other it joins Wicking Lane, Blackshaw Clough Road and Lighthazles Chapel Road. All of them are unclassified lanes, and from Bradford, by Halifax and the A58 through Sowerby Bridge, the trip is roughly 40 to 55 minutes.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 55 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Lighthazles
Where can the van stop on Lighthazles Road?
Wherever your drive or yard gives room, ideally. On a lane like this we would rather pull fully off than leave the van half on the road, so tell us if you have a yard, a drive or a field gate, and how far it is from the door.
Is Lighthazles in Ripponden parish or not?
Yes, it is. The postcode lookup for HX6 4NP gives Ripponden parish in the Ryburn ward, while Cotton Stones next door is mostly unparished Calderdale. Bins and council tax go through Calderdale Council either way.
Does it matter that the old houses here are listed?
Not for the move itself: listing protects the building, not what you carry in or out. It is worth mentioning if the only way in is through an old gateway, such as the 1690 arch at Clay House, so we can measure before the day.
