Barkisland: what to know before moving day
The village has a school, Christ Church of 1852 to 1854, a post office, a cricket club in the Huddersfield Cricket League and two pubs, The Griffin, a house of 1642 later made an inn, and The Fleece. Barkisland Hall, a Grade I listed house built for John Gledhill in 1638 on an F-shaped plan, was bought in 1967 by Lord Kagan, maker of Gannex raincoats. Near the post office, School Green is a listed pair of 18th-century cottages.
Industry left some big buildings. Barkisland Mill, six storeys high, was converted into flats early this century, and Bowers Mill, an 18th-century fulling mill, now houses smaller businesses. Along Stainland Road are listed 17th-century houses and the village stocks, and North Royd, Stonelea, Field Hurst and Pinfold Close are the residential closes. How the van gets to Barkisland
The B6114 Saddleworth Road runs through the village and meets Stainland Road and Scammonden Road there. Barsey Green Lane links the B6114 with the B6113 Greetland Road, which runs down into Ripponden as Ripponden New Bank one way and towards Greetland the other. To the south, the hill keeps rising towards Scammonden, where the M62 crosses the dam.
