Soyland Town: what to know before moving day
The name Soyland comes from the Middle English soghland, meaning boggy land. Soyland was a township, became an urban district in 1894 and was merged into Ripponden in 1937; in 1931 the parish had 3,059 people. Several textile mills once worked in the area and have all closed, and the Calderdale Way walking route passes through.
Soyland Town Road is the main street, and the listed houses along it include 23 to 29, a 17th-century house later divided, and 31 and 33, two mid-18th-century cottages made into one. On Lane Head Road there is a listed house of 1727 at 15 and 17, and Lane Head itself is late 17th century with listed barns beside it, while Brown Hill is another 17th-century listed house nearby. Foxen Lane and Hob Lane lead off to farms, so for an outlying address give us the house name.
How the van gets to Soyland Town
Soyland Town Road leads down by Stony Lane and Royd Lane to the A58 Halifax Road in the middle of Ripponden. In the other direction, Foxen Lane links it with Lower Mill Bank Road and Mill Bank. From Bradford the van comes through Halifax and Sowerby Bridge on the A58.
