Wainstalls: what to know before moving day
Wainstalls had a mill, and a factory still stands in the middle of the village; Wikipedia records it as the home of Heights (UK) Ltd, a manufacturer. In the late 19th century the mill owner, James Calvert, brought 250 orphans from Liverpool to work there, and they became known locally as the Wainstall waifs. Wainstalls Church and Sunday School, built of sandstone in 1857 with Venetian windows, is Grade II listed, and Wainstalls School, where the Paralympian Hannah Cockroft studied, is a short walk away.
