Over and under: which way do the stairs go?

Ask anyone who has moved a wardrobe into a four-storey terrace built into the valley wall. The top two floors are one house, entered from the uphill street; the bottom two are a separate house entered from the downhill street. So before we load we want to know which street your door is on, how many steps sit between it and the road, and whether the turn at the top of the stairs is square or winding.

Furniture bought locally tends to come from the studio and workshop units on Valley Road and Victoria Road, or from Bridge Mill, rather than from a shed on a retail park, because there isn't one. Everything else comes up the A646. The centre is narrow and part-pedestrianised around St George's Square, Bridge Gate and Market Street, with formal loading bays only on Old Gate and Valley Road, so a delivery is timed for when the through route is actually passable.

Usually, yes, and it is the standard job here. What matters is the width of the staircase and the turn at the top rather than the number of steps. Send photos of both plus the doorway and we will tell you before you buy whether it goes up whole, needs feet off, or will not make it.

Where will the van actually park?

For a central address, the loading bays on Old Gate or Valley Road, which are the only realistic van standing in town. Elsewhere we get as close as the street allows and trolley the rest. On Heptonstall's setted lanes that can mean stopping at the last point the van can turn round.

Can you take the old furniture with you?

Yes, if you want it gone. The old sofa, bed or appliance goes out as the new one comes in, on the same visit, and old appliances go to a household waste recycling centre. What we do not do is clear a whole house, a cellar or a garden, which is a different trade entirely.
