Over and under: two flights up, or two flights down

The double-decker terraces are four and five storey blocks built into the valley wall, where the top two floors are one house entered from the uphill street and the bottom two are a separate house entered from the downhill street. So the useful information at booking is not the postcode, it is the street we can stand on, how many flights lie between that and the kitchen, and which direction they run. Down is the harder half with a seventy-five kilo machine.

Getting the van near the door is the other half. The centre around St George's Square, Bridge Gate and Market Street is very narrow and partly pedestrianised, with formal loading bays only on Old Gate and Valley Road, and parked cars regularly block the through route outright. Heptonstall Road, Birchcliffe Road, Keighley Road and the Buttress are steep, narrow and partly cobbled, and Heptonstall itself is setted lanes with effectively nowhere to turn a long wheelbase.
