Illingworth: what to know before moving day
Around School Lane and Tewit Lane are School Close, School Crescent, Tewit Green, Tewit Hall Gardens, Popples Drive and Valley Way. Housing here mixes social housing, from the estates Halifax council built on the north side of town, with newer private homes; most of the Abbey Park scheme off Keighley Road was demolished for private housing. The North Halifax Grammar School, Trinity Academy Whitehill and The Whitley AP Academy are all near School Lane, so a weekday move is easier outside school-run times.
The old village keeps its history. The former lock-up of 1823, which had four cells, is Grade II* listed and stands beside village stocks dated 1697, and St Mary's Church dates from 1777. The Popples Almshouses of 1840 and a row of 19th-century cottages at 18 to 24 Holdsworth Road are listed too. Illingworth St Mary's Cricket Club plays in the Halifax Cricket League, and the rugby league club plays at Mason Green.
How the van gets to Illingworth
The A629 Keighley Road is the main road, running from Halifax through Ovenden and Illingworth to Denholme and Keighley. From School Lane the way out to it is along Tewit Lane and Natty Lane. From the Bradford side, the van can cross from Queensbury to Holmfield and up Holdsworth Road, or come out of Halifax on the A629.
