The A647 runs down through Horton Bank Top and Great Horton into Bradford and the A644 Brighouse Road drops the other way, so a first-year heading for Bradford, Leeds or Huddersfield gets a downhill run with a full van and a straightforward one. The return in June is that same road in reverse, uphill and loaded, which is slower than the map suggests. We allow for it rather than promise a time we cannot keep.
Loading is the other half. The stone terraces off High Street open straight onto a busy road, with no off-street parking and rear yards reached only by a ginnel, so a mattress and a chest of drawers go out of the front door with traffic passing behind. We work those addresses early. For a January or Easter return we check the forecast first, because this village holds ice and snow long after Bradford has cleared.
