Moving in Coley: what to know first
Coley is spread thin along two lanes, so the first thing to settle is which end you are at. At the church end, Coley Road is an unclassified lane with bus stops by St John's church and at Stocks Farm, and the van can pull in close to the door. For the halls further on, the last stretch is the bridleway, so say how firm it is in wet weather and whether the van can turn at your gate.
The buildings round the halls are old: Coley Hall refronted in the 18th century, Coley Croft with its barn now a garage, the seven-bay barn of 1794 and Coley Walks Farmhouse, a pair of cottages with two doorways. Furniture from the halls comes out along the bridleway, so a dry day helps, and beds and flat-pack are taken apart before they are carried. Soaper House Lane, to the south, is a 60 mph lane, so the van never waits on it.
Coley: the local picture
For a hamlet, Coley has a remarkable cluster of listed buildings. Coley Hall, built on the site of a medieval priory and refronted in the 18th century with nine bays, is Grade II*, and so is its entrance archway, dated 1649 and carved with dogs and other animals. Beside them are a seven-bay barn of 1794, Coley Walks Farmhouse and Coley Croft. Wynteredge Hall, parts of it thought to date from 1371, was rebuilt in the 1640s. The present church was built in 1816 and restored in 1902.
There are two ends to plan for. The halls are on Coley Hall Lane, which is a dirt-surfaced public bridleway, so tell us how your drive or yard is reached before the van sets off. The church, the Old Vicarage and St John's View are on Coley Road, and the 571 bus between Halifax and Shelf passes through about once an hour each way on weekdays. Shutts Lane and Northedge Lane are the lanes to the south-east.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Coley
Which ward is a Coley address in?
It depends which end. The halls around Coley Hall Lane are HX3 8 postcodes in the Hipperholme and Lightcliffe ward, while the church, HX3 7SA, and the postcodes close to it on Coley Road come up as Northowram and Shelf. Both are Calderdale, so council tax and bins go to the same council.
Is Coley Hall Lane fit for a van?
It is a public bridleway with a dirt surface, so it depends on the weather and your gate. Send a photo of the lane at your end and tell us whether there is room to turn; if not, we plan the load from where the lane meets Coley Road.
Is Coley a separate place from Norwood Green?
Yes. Coley adjoins Norwood Green to the east, Shelf to the north and Hipperholme to the south, with no parish council of its own. Its church parish is wider than the hamlet and takes in Norwood Green and parts of Hipperholme, which is why the names overlap.
