Moving in Lower Shelf: what to know first
Lower Shelf is a few houses and farms along Coley Road, an unclassified lane that leaves the A644 a short way south-east of the Stone Chair roundabout. The A644 is a 40 mph main road with a one-way section near the roundabout, and the A6036 meets it there at 40 mph too, so the van turns off onto Coley Road and loads there or in your yard, never on the main road. Coley Road carries the 571 bus, so the van pulls well in to let it by.
Several homes are parts of divided farmhouses or converted farm groups: Plane Trees Farmhouse is split in two with its cottage and barn, and Windmill Hill is a two-storey house with a single-storey cottage set at right angles. With a divided farmhouse, check which part is yours and which side its door opens on before the day, and tell us if the van has to come into a shared yard to reach it.
Lower Shelf: the local picture
Several of the old buildings here are listed. 13 and 14 Coley Road are a pair of stone cottages dated 1767, and Plane Trees Farmhouse, now divided in two with its cottage and barn, is mid 17th century. Lower Field Bottom Farmhouse, a mid 16th-century timber-framed house cased in stone a century later, is Grade II*, with its aisled barn beside it. Across the A644, Hargreaves Head dates from 1693 and was largely rebuilt around 1740 with a seven-bay front, and Windmill Hill is early 18th century.
A set of reconstructed stocks stands by the road junction near Hargreaves Head. Plane Tree Farm, beside the listed farmhouse, is a camp site, and Coley Beck and Sun Wood lie to the north. The listed houses are stone with mullioned windows, so measure doorways before booking a wide sofa or wardrobe, and send the figures with a photo.
How the van gets to Lower Shelf
The quickest way keeps to main roads: out of Bradford on Great Horton Road and Cooper Lane, along the A6036 to Stone Chair, a short stretch south on the A644 Brighouse and Denholme Gate Road, then left into Coley Road. That is estimated at roughly 15 to 30 minutes from Bradford.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 15 to 30 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Lower Shelf
My Lower Shelf postcode is the same as Coley church's. Is that right?
It can be. HX3 7SA covers this part of Coley Road and is also the postcode for St John the Baptist church, so one postcode can take in several houses and farms. Give us the house or farm name as well as the postcode so the van stops at the right gate.
Is Lower Shelf in Shelf or in Coley?
In between. Lower Shelf is a neighbourhood on Coley Road below Shelf village, and postcodes.io places it in the Northowram and Shelf ward. Coley church is a short way east along the same road.
Is Coley Road suitable for a long van?
Yes, it is a public road with the 571 bus along it. Some farms sit down their own drives, so tell us whether there is room to turn in the yard.
