Shelf: what to know before moving day
Shelf grew with mills and workers' cottages during the Industrial Revolution. The pair of cottages at 7 and 9 Brow Lane, dated 1799, and 11 Carr House Road are listed, and Bethel Methodist Church of 1853, built on a square plan, is a village landmark. St Michael and All Angels, the parish church, dates from 1850, and its Church of England primary school is off the main road near Witchfield Hill. Residential streets include Greenacres, Burnside Avenue, Brow Wood Road and Willow Park Drive.
The centre has a bakery and pharmacy, a village hall, a library opened in 2009 and a Lidl, and Shelf Hall Park is a short walk away. The Duke William stands at Witchfield Hill, with the Bottomleys Arms and Prince of Orange further along. If you are moving into Shelf, bins and council tax go through Calderdale rather than Bradford.
How the van gets to Shelf
The A6036 is the through road, named Witchfield Hill, Wade House Road and Carr House Road as it passes the centre and Halifax Road towards the Stone Chair roundabout. It links Shelf with Halifax one way and Bradford the other. Shelf Moor Road and Brow Lane leave it in the village, and the B6147 Cooper Lane branches off Carr House Road.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 15 to 25 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Why is Shelf in Calderdale when Queensbury is in Bradford?
From 1937 the two shared the Queensbury and Shelf Urban District. When it was abolished in 1974, Shelf went to Calderdale and Queensbury to Bradford, which is why Shelf has HX3 postcodes and a Calderdale council.
