Akroydon: what to know before moving day
George Gilbert Scott drew the first plans, and local architect W. H. Crossland adapted them when Akroyd's building association turned down Scott's dormer windows. The scheme was meant to be a quadrangle of 350 houses, but only 90 were built. The houses came in different sizes for people of different means, sold on low-cost mortgages, so the houses are not one uniform size. In the middle of the square, now a small park called The Square, stands the Victoria Cross monument of 1875.
Chester Road, Ripon Terrace and Beverley Terrace run round and near The Square, all mapped at 20 mph; actor Eric Portman was born at 71 Chester Road in 1901, and a memorial marks it. Bankfield Museum, Akroyd's own house, is just east in Akroyd Park and holds the Duke of Wellington's Regiment museum. To the south-east, part way up Haley Hill, the Grade I listed All Souls' Church, which Akroyd paid for, has a 236-foot spire that makes a handy marker for the driver.
How the van gets to Akroydon
Akroydon sits right beside the A647, which runs as Haley Hill and then Boothtown Road between Halifax town centre and Queensbury. The van turns off the main road into the side streets round The Square. From Bradford the A647 comes over Queensbury and down through Boothtown, so this is one of the first parts of Halifax on that road; allow roughly 20 to 35 minutes.
