King Cross: what to know before moving day
Before 1850 this was fields and hamlets. The mills brought people, King Cross became its own church parish in 1845, and by the end of the century about 17,000 people lived here. That growth is still on the map as a dense grid of terraced streets either side of King Cross Road and Queen's Road, from Hyde Park Road to Haugh Shaw Road, most of them mapped at 20 mph. Around King Cross Road and Queen's Road the map shows the King Cross library, a post office and a Tesco.
Wainhouse Tower, just south of the shops, is hard to miss: built as a dye-works chimney and finished in 1875, it is the tallest structure in Calderdale, with 403 steps inside. St Paul's Church, completed in 1912, stands nearby. Calderdale College is on Francis Street, just off King Cross Road, and John Mackintosh opened his first toffee shop on King Cross Lane in 1890. How the van gets to King Cross
King Cross is a junction as much as a place. The A58 from Halifax divides here: the A646 Burnley Road branches west towards Hebden Bridge and Burnley, while Rochdale Road carries on as the A58 towards Sowerby Bridge and Littleborough. Skircoat Moor Road and Dryclough Lane, both part of the A646, run past the tower. Warley Road and Hopwood Lane climb north-west towards Highroad Well.
