Southowram: what to know before moving day
The village is a real mix. Parts of the centre were knocked down and rebuilt in the 1970s and 1980s, and council housing replaced older buildings on New Street and fills much of the lower village, yet plenty of old stone buildings survive, including the ancient stocks on Town Gate. The former Methodist chapel at the bottom of Chapel Lane is now apartments. Tell us which kind of house yours is, and send photos of the stairs if it is one of the old stone ones.
Law Hill House on Law Lane, a three-storey house that was a boarding school in 1837, is where Emily Bronte taught for about six months; a plaque marks it. St Anne-in-the-Grove, the parish church, lies below the village among trees and fields. Quarrying still goes on: Marshalls works the stone, the Brookfoot Lane quarries are open, and OpenStreetMap shows the Marshalls West Lane works and the Pinnar Lane quarries at the edge of the houses.
How the van gets to Southowram
From Halifax the usual climb is Beacon Hill Road up to Bank Top, then Law Lane into the village, arriving where Law Lane meets Town Gate and Cain Lane. Pinnar Lane is a second way up from Bank Top. West Lane leaves the village to the south-west and Church Lane to the east. Most of the village streets are mapped at 20 mph.

Is Southowram in Halifax or Brighouse?
Neither, strictly. Southowram had its own urban district until 1937, when most of it, the village included, went to the borough of Brighouse. Since 1974 it has been run directly by Calderdale Council with no parish council, and the postcode is HX3, a Halifax district.
Where does the name Southowram come from?
Owram comes from the Old English for a flat-topped ridge, which is what the village sits on. Northowram shares the name from the other side of the Shibden Valley, so check which one the address is in.
