Thornton: what to know before moving day
Market Street was the main road until 1826, when the new Thornton Road bypassed it. Since then most building has gone along Thornton Road, down the slope of the hill, which left Market Street largely untouched: it is the backbone of the conservation area, with stone houses and stone flagged roofs. The Brontës were born at 74 Market Street, and OpenStreetMap shows Market Street as one-way, so say which end your door is nearer when you book.
The listed buildings around the Thornton Road end are mostly cottages stepped down the hill: South Square, a group of 1832 built round three sides of a yard, the back-to-back rows on Friendly Street and Priestley Street, and 1 to 17 Bridge Street. Kipping Barn, an aisled gritstone barn of the early 17th century, is close by on Kipping Lane. Many of these cottages have stairs and doors sized for the early 1800s, which is worth checking before a large sofa goes on the list.
To the west, Thornton Viaduct crosses the Pinch Beck valley in an S-shaped curve of 20 arches. It carried the railway to Keighley until the line closed and is now Grade II listed and part of the Great Northern Railway Trail, a walking and cycling route towards Queensbury and Cullingworth.
How the van gets to Thornton
Thornton Road, the B6145, is the main road to Bradford and the way the van comes in, through School Green on the city side. In the village, James Street, Kipping Lane and Bridge Street all meet it, and Market Street runs parallel on the hill above. Keep the B6145 as the reference point when describing where you are, and say whether the house is above or below it.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 15 to 25 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
