Denholme: what to know before moving day
Denholme's Victorian terraces were built by the Foster family for the workers at their textile mills. The mills have gone and their sites are partly used for light industry. The town's streets include Clapham Street, Parkinson Road, School Street, Albion Street and Longhouse Lane. OpenStreetMap marks Clapham Street, Parkinson Road and School Street as one-way, which matters when you plan where a long van can stop and which way it will leave.
Foster Park, given to the town in 1922 by William Foster, is the obvious landmark: it holds the war memorial, a Grade II listed bronze soldier, plus the bowling green and the skate area. The library is in the Mechanics Institute, and the Royal and the New Inn are the two pubs. Doe Park Reservoir, with its water activity centre and sailing club, lies just east of the town. Older buildings include the former St Paul's Church and the former Denholme Clough Methodist Church, both listed and both converted into homes, and Upper Laithe Farmhouse of 1726.
The postcode lookup puts Denholme in the Worth Valley ward of the City of Bradford, and the town has its own parish. At about 850 feet up, its old station was the highest on the Great Northern system before it closed, so plan for weather on the tops in winter.
How the van gets to Denholme
From Bradford, the B6145 Thornton Road runs out through Thornton and meets the A629, the Keighley to Halifax road, south of Denholme. The A629 then runs north into the town as Main Road and continues towards Keighley as Keighley Road, all at 30 mph through the built-up part. Stone mileposts on the A629 either side of the town are listed, a sign of how long this has been the through road.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 20 to 35 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
