Allerton: what to know before moving day
A large part of Allerton, mostly towards the south, was built as council housing in the decades after the Second World War, and that part holds over half the population of the Thornton and Allerton ward. On the western edge, Heron's Reach is a development of nearly 300 houses on a former green belt site, begun at the end of 2016. Older stone survives too: St Peter's Church of 1879, and the listed Allerton Warehouse, two blocks of a textile mill from the 1850s, one of them running parallel to the road.
Allerton Road is the spine, with the shops, the library and the post office along it. The Aldi stands where the Seabrook crisp factory was: Seabrook opened here in 1956, closed the factory in 2004, and the Aldi was built on the site in 2016. Ladyhill Park holds the listed war memorial, and Chellow Dene, the wooded valley with two Victorian reservoirs, is on the northern edge. Schools make handy reference points: Beckfoot Allerton on Allerton Road, St Matthew's Catholic Primary, Ley Top Primary at the top of Bell Dean Road, and Dixons Allerton Academy on the eastern edge near the Rhodesway estate.
How the van gets to Allerton
From the city side, come in on Allerton Road, which crosses Pearson Lane and Rhodesway and then runs west through the centre as a 30 mph road. Ley Top Lane, Chapel Lane and Greenbank Road are among the streets that meet it. Bell Dean Road serves the southern part of the village, with Ley Top Primary at its upper end, so for an address down there name Bell Dean Road as well as your own street.
