Heaton: what to know before moving day
The village core is older than most of Bradford's suburbs. 7 Shay Lane and Royds Hall Farmhouse, the second listed Grade II*, both carry the date 1632, and 23 and 25 Syke Road date from 1736. On Highgate, 72 to 82 are a row of cottages stepped down the hill, 56 to 68 another row, and 18 and 20 a house and a shop of the late 18th century. St Barnabas' Church dates from 1864. With cottages of that age, measure the stairs before planning where a wardrobe will go.
J. B. Priestley grew up in Heaton, and it is one of the few places in England that still has a lord of the manor. The ward is home to five golf courses, the official residence of the Bishop of Bradford and Bradford Grammar School. Heaton Woods, looked after by the Heaton Woods Trust since 1977, cover nearly 50 acres from Park Drive and Redburn to the Cat Steps at the bottom of Quarry Street.
Useful markers for the van are the King's Arms, the Heaton Hill recreation ground, St Barnabas' primary school, the Heaton allotments, Heaton post office and Heaton Pharmacy.
How the van gets to Heaton
Toller Lane, the B6144, runs out from the city past Heaton, meeting Leylands Lane and Heaton Park Drive, and carries on west as Haworth Road. On the eastern side, Heaton Road runs north from Scotchman Road to Emm Lane, where it also meets Highgate, so Highgate is the way into the old centre from that direction.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 10 to 20 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Are Heaton and Frizinghall one place or two?
Two neighbours sharing a ward. Heaton was its own chapelry, then a civil parish from 1866 until it merged with Bradford in 1898. Frizinghall is the district further north-east, around its railway station. Both are in the Heaton and Frizinghall ward today.
