Sandy Lane: what to know before moving day
Sandy Lane stayed a small village until a series of new developments arrived in the 1990s. Residents opposed to the plans formed their own group and voted for a parish council in 2003. Near the middle of the village, a group of streets off Cottingley Road is named after trees and shrubs, among them Acacia Drive, Magnolia Drive, Syringa Avenue and Hornbeam Close, with Monterey Drive and Florida Road close by.
The older housing is on the main roads. 111 to 127 Cottingley Road is a listed row of cottages from about 1830, stepped down the hill, and 41 Cottingley Road is a stone house of about 1840. The village has a primary school, a church, the Victoria Hotel pub and Greenwood Park, where the cricket club plays. Nearby are Chellow Dene Woods, the Chellow Heights water treatment works and West Bradford Golf Course. With a stepped row like Cottingley Road's, the front step height and any steps up from the pavement are worth mentioning.
How the van gets to Sandy Lane
The village crossroads is where Stony Lane meets the B6144, Haworth Road on one side and Wilsden Road on the other, and the B6146 Cottingley Road; bus timetables call it Sandy Lane Cross Roads. The B6144 links the village with Wilsden and with Bradford, and the B6146 heads north as Cottingley Road and then Cottingley Moor Road towards Cottingley. The stretch of Cottingley Road through the village is signed at 20 mph.
