Frizinghall: what to know before moving day
The name is thought to come from frieze, a rough woollen cloth made here, and the hall where it was made, though other explanations exist. Today the district is shaped by the railway and the school. Frizinghall station opened in 1875, closed in 1965 and reopened in 1987 after a campaign led by a Bradford Grammar School teacher; the school itself moved to Frizinghall in the late 1940s. The two platforms sit either side of Frizinghall Road, both reached by ramps from the road bridge, and trains run to Bradford Forster Square, Leeds, Shipley, Ilkley and Skipton.
West of Keighley Road the streets run up towards Heaton Woods and Northcliffe Park: Redburn Road, Redburn Drive, the Aireville streets and Wharncliffe Road among them. Norwood Road and Shipley Fields Road are on the Shipley side, and Shipley Fields Hall, an early 19th-century house, is listed. Red Beck flows from Heaton Woods through this side of the district. Handy markers are Frizinghall post office, the Shipley Club bowling green and Northcliffe golf course.
How the van gets to Frizinghall
Keighley Road, the A650, is the road from the city: out through Manningham past Lister Park and straight through Frizinghall, becoming Bradford Road as it enters Shipley. It is a 30 mph road with side streets leading off both sides. Frizinghall Road runs east from it past the station, crossing the line on the road bridge, and joins Canal Road, the A6037.
