Saltaire decides the morning, Canal Road does the rest

The World Heritage grid is a tight set of narrow stone streets, Titus Street, George Street and Ada Street among them, with resident-permit parking, no driveways at all and front doors opening straight onto the pavement. A long wheelbase van does not park outside a Saltaire terrace and wait. It stops at the nearest legal point and the load comes to it on a trolley, which is fine when it is planned for and painful when it is not.

Canal Road and the Saltaire roundabout also queue badly at peak, and the town centre has been reworked around the new Market Square with a one-way loop and changed bays on Kirkgate and Crowgill Road. So collections for a nationwide run go early. Once loaded, the van keeps everything: no depot, no transfer to a lorry, no shared load, and a delivery time at the far end agreed before we pull away.

How soon are you actually on the motorway?

About ten minutes. Canal Road runs into Bradford and onto the M606, which joins the M62. That makes Shipley one of the cheaper starting points for a long job, because almost none of the day is spent getting out of the area, unlike a collection up the valley.
