Marketplace Collection in Shipley

Four miles up the Canal Road from us, Shipley is close enough that a collection agreed at lunchtime can be in your living room by evening. The complication isn't the distance. It's Saltaire, where the streets were laid out in the 1850s and have not got any wider since.

Collecting inside a World Heritage Site

Saltaire is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a conservation area, which in practical terms means a tight grid of narrow stone streets, Titus Street, George Street and Ada Street among them, with resident-permit parking, no driveways and front doors opening straight onto the pavement. There is nowhere to pull in. A collection there usually means stopping at the nearest legal point and making a short barrow run with the trolley and blankets.

Beyond the grid the town splits three ways. Mill conversions along the canal and Salts Mill Road need a lift and an agreed loading route. The banks up to Wrose and Windhill are steep and slow with a load on. And the new Market Square has reworked the centre into a one-way loop with changed bays and restricted movements on Kirkgate and Crowgill Road, so the obvious route in isn't always the route in.

What Shipley marketplace & ebay collection usually involves

  • A650 Canal Road or Manningham Lane from Bradford, four miles and ten to twenty minutes, so same-day collections are genuinely realistic
  • Saltaire has resident permit zones throughout, so loading usually means a short barrow run from the nearest legal stop
  • Windhill, Frizinghall and the Saltaire terraces are on-street only with doors onto the pavement and no rear vehicle access
  • Canal Road and the Saltaire roundabout queue at peak, so we book collections mid-morning or mid-afternoon where we can
  • Mill apartment sellers on Salts Mill Road should confirm lift access and where a van is allowed to stand before the day

Where in Shipley we work

  • Saltairethe 1850s model-village grid, permit streets and a barrow run from wherever we can legally stop
  • Windhillgritstone through-terraces and back-to-backs, on-street only with a front-door carry
  • Frizinghallcheaper terraces, a lot of rental turnover and a steady flow of furniture onto the local pages
  • Nab Wood and Moorheadinterwar and post-war semis with drives and gardens, the easy collections
  • Wroseup the bank out of the Aire valley, slow going loaded but plenty of space to park at the top
  • Salts Mill and Dockfield Roadmill apartments and industrial units, collected off a loading door or a booked lift

If your street isn't listed it's almost certainly still covered, Shipley and the surrounding BD17, BD18 postcodes are all inside our normal working area.

Common Shipley runs

  • Shipley → Bradfordfour miles down Canal Road, our shortest regular collection run
  • Saltaire → Bingley or Keighleystraight up the A650 valley, a common Airedale pairing
  • Shipley → Leedsout via Bradford or the Otley Road side when the buyer is over that way

What it costs

Shipley is close enough that the price is driven almost entirely by the carry and the time on site rather than the distance travelled. There's no travel surcharge for coming to Shipley from Bradford, and you get the price before we set off, not after. See how we quote for the full breakdown.

Frequently asked questions: marketplace & ebay collection in Shipley

Can you get a van into the Saltaire streets?

We can get into them; parking on them is the issue. Titus Street and its neighbours are permit-controlled, narrow and have doors straight onto the pavement. We stop at the nearest legal point and barrow the item down with the trolley and blankets, which is how everyone works there.

It's only a couple of miles. Is it worth booking a van?

For anything that won't go in a car, yes. Four miles is nothing, and what you're paying for is two people-worth of lifting, blankets, straps and it being carried into the right room. Short local jobs are priced on the time they take, so they're the cheapest work we do.

The seller is in a Salts Mill Road apartment. Anything I should ask them?

Ask whether there's a lift, which floor they're on, and where a van is allowed to stand while we load. Mill conversions vary enormously, and knowing that before the day is the difference between a twenty-minute collection and an hour of carrying down a stairwell.
