Saltaire: what to know before moving day
Every building in the model village is individually listed, with the United Reformed Church, originally the Congregational church, at Grade I. Salt's terraces fill a grid of streets such as George Street, Titus Street, Caroline Street, Mawson Street, Lockwood Street and William Henry Street, with Albert Road on the western side. The 1871 census counted 800 dwellings, 45 of them almshouses. Bradford Council's planning officers have even drawn up a list of replacement front doors they judged out of keeping, so in a house this old measure the door and the turn of the stairs before booking a big sofa, rather than planning to take anything apart on the outside.
Victoria Road runs past Victoria Hall and the Shipley College buildings to Salts Mill, the canal and the station, and parts of it are laid in setts. Salts Mill stopped making cloth in 1986 and now holds the 1853 Gallery, shops, restaurants and offices; Roberts Park lies across the River Aire. The Saltaire Festival runs for 11 days every September and the Arts Trail each May, when Open Houses bring visitors into residents' homes, so plan a move in those weeks around the crowds.
How the van gets to Saltaire
The A650, the Aire valley road between Bradford and Keighley, runs past the village as Bradford Road and Bingley Road, and the A657 Saltaire Road ends at a junction with it here. From either, the van turns into the grid of streets. Give the exact house number and street, and say where a long van can wait while it is loaded, because these are residential streets of terraced houses.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 10 to 25 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Does living in a World Heritage Site change anything on moving day?
The loading works as it would anywhere, but every house in the model village is listed and the whole of Saltaire is a conservation area. Changes to the outside of a house, down to the front door, draw the attention of the council's planning officers, so furniture has to fit through the house as it stands. Send measurements and photos of anything large.
Is Saltaire station close enough to help on a move?
It is near Salts Mill, at that end of Victoria Road, on the Airedale line towards Bradford, Leeds and Skipton. It closed in 1965 and reopened in 1984. It helps if you are travelling to the new house by train while the van brings the furniture.
