Eccleshill: what to know before moving day
Stony Lane has been the shopping street for two centuries; Henry Sparks opened his first bakery shop here. Victoria Road took that name in 1889, for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, replacing Mill Lane, Town Lane and Town Street. Around them, Eccleshill has 34 listed buildings, more than any other district of Bradford except Saltaire and Little Germany: houses on Moorside Road and Stone Hall Road, the three-storey weavers' houses of 1851 to 1854 on Moorwell Place, and the Mechanics' Institute of 1868 on Stone Hall Road. Three-storey weavers' houses mean long stair runs, so say which floor you are on.
The mills tell the rest of the story. The Old Mill on Victoria Road is dated 1863, on the site of a woollen mill of 1800, and Moorside Mills, built in 1875 for worsted spinning, became Bradford Industrial Museum in 1974, off Moorside Road. Union Mills and Pilley's Mill on Harrogate Road were demolished in 2019 and replaced by a retail park with a Lidl. Eccleshill Library is on Bolton Road, and St Luke's Church, consecrated in 1848, lost its spire around 1971.
How the van gets to Eccleshill
The two main roads are the A658 Harrogate Road, which runs north to south, and the A6176, made up of Bolton Road and Pullan Avenue. Stony Lane, Victoria Road and Stone Hall Road link them through the old centre. OpenStreetMap shows Victoria Road and Pullan Avenue as one-way in places, so give the driver both the street and the nearest main road.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 10 to 20 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Is there a railway station in Eccleshill?
Not any more. Eccleshill station opened in 1875 on the line from Laisterdyke to Shipley and closed to passengers in 1931; only part of an embankment by Harrogate Road survives. Apperley Bridge station is about a mile and a half away.
