Thorpe Edge: what to know before moving day
The estate was farmland until it was built, mostly in the 1950s, as low-rise housing with two high-rise developments, the York Place flats and the Fairhaven Green flats, all eight storeys. York House, the larger block with shops on the ground floor, was found unfit for purpose; demolition began in summer 2024 and finished in early 2025, and the site is waiting for new social housing. Mid-rise flats on the northern edge came down in the 2010s. If you are moving in or out of one of the remaining eight-storey blocks, check the lift and whether the van can stop near the entrance, and say so when you book.
St John the Divine church is on Idlethorp Way and Parkland Primary School serves the estate. With York House gone there are no shops on the estate itself: the retail park at Five Lane Ends, Sainsbury's and Matalan at Greengates and Eccleshill Pool on Harrogate Road are the nearest. The Rockwell Community Centre and the Eccleshill NHS Treatment Centre are further landmarks close by.
How the van gets to Thorpe Edge
Harrogate Road, the A658, is the main approach: it runs north from Bradford through Eccleshill towards Greengates and Apperley Bridge. Inside the estate, Rockwell Lane and Averingcliffe Road both branch off Idlethorp Way, which is the street to name if yours is one of the smaller ones. Apperley Bridge station is roughly a mile away if anyone is travelling separately.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 10 to 25 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Wikipedia describes Thorpe Edge as the south-east part of Idle village, but for council purposes it is in the Eccleshill ward, and its postcodes are BD10. Bradford Council handles it either way.
