Greengates: what to know before moving day
The crossroads is the landmark to give the driver, with the large war memorial to the dead of both world wars standing on it. The Asda on New Line occupies the site of the Greengates Cinema, a 595-seat picture house built in 1928 and closed in 1959. Up Harrogate Road are Sainsbury's, B&M, Farmfoods and Eccleshill Pool, and St John the Evangelist church sits north of the crossroads.
Mills stand on the western side: Albion Mills, burnt out in March 1911 and rebuilt, is now offices and business units, and Robin Mills, where knitting yarn was once spun, is split into industrial units. Homes spread through the streets behind the main roads, among them Averingcliffe Road, Holybrook Avenue and Cherry Tree Avenue, and there are listed buildings at Beck Bottom, Carr Bottom Road, Haigh Hall, New Line and Stockhill Fold. Trolleybuses reached Greengates from Idle in 1931, along Albion Road and Leeds Road.
How the van gets to Greengates
The A658 Harrogate Road runs north out of Bradford through Eccleshill and straight into Greengates, which makes it the natural way in for the van. The A657 crosses it at the crossroads on its way between Calverley and Thackley. Both carry 30 mph limits and shops line parts of them, so for a flat over a shop, tell the driver where the rear entrance is or which side street to use.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 10 to 25 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Bradford. Most of Greengates is in the Idle and Thackley ward of Bradford Council, with a part in Eccleshill ward, and the postcode is BD10. The Leeds district starts just to the east at Calverley, so a short move across that line also means a change of council.
How far is Apperley Bridge station from Greengates?
Greengates has none of its own. Apperley Bridge station, opened in 2015 on the line between Leeds and Shipley, is just under a mile to the north.
