Thackley: what to know before moving day
Thackley Corner is the crossroads that everything turns on: Town Lane heads south to Idle, Thackley Road runs north into the houses, and the A657 Leeds Road crosses it. The Corner and the stretch of Leeds Road to the west hold most of the shops, pubs and places to eat. The older housing is listed stone. Crag Hill Road has a terrace built around 1800 to 1830 with two and three storeys, Park Road and Thackley Road have long rows of the same age, and Burnwells has back-to-back houses dated 1800 and 1822. A back-to-back house has no back door, so every piece of furniture comes and goes through the front.
Industry left its mark on the newer homes. Brackendale Mill, a woollen mill from around 1800 in the north of Thackley, is now housing, and Weavers Croft off Crag Hill Road stands on part of the old Bowling Green Mills site. Under the hill run the two Thackley railway tunnels, with pairs of ventilation shafts across the farms in the north of the village.
Buck Wood covers 42 hectares between the houses and the canal. Along its top edge Ainsbury Avenue runs towards Esholt, and Thackley AFC's Dennyfield ground is in the wood to the north-west. Thackley Primary School is south-east of Thackley Corner, and Immanuel College is on Leeds Road.
How the van gets to Thackley
The A657 Leeds Road is the main road through, from Shipley in the west to Greengates in the east, and Thackley Corner is on it. Town Lane links it with Idle to the south. On Crag Hill Road the old railway line is crossed by a humped-back bridge of 1874, next to the former station building, so mention it if the house is beyond the bridge.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 10 to 25 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

No. Buck Mill Lane drops down Buck Hill to the canal, and Buck Mill Bridge over the River Aire is a foot and bridle bridge. A run between Thackley and Charlestown in Baildon goes round by road through Shipley.
Is Ainsbury Avenue a public road?
No, it is a private road, the tree-lined way along the top of Buck Wood towards Esholt. If the address is on it, say so when you book so access for the van can be sorted out in advance.
