Esholt: what to know before moving day
The village grew on the estate of a Cistercian nunnery, and Esholt Hall, a Queen Anne mansion of 1706 to 1707, stands on the nunnery site. Esholt Old Hall at Upper Esholt is probably 16th century and Grade II* listed, and many other listed buildings line Esholt Lane, Cunliffe Lane, Chapel Lane, Church Lane, Main Street and The Avenue. Many homes are old stone buildings, so measure the tallest and widest pieces against the doorways before the day.
Main Street holds the post office, the Esholt Memorial Hall and the listed Woolpack pub, renamed from the Commercial Inn during the Emmerdale years. St Paul's Church, built in 1839 as a family chapel, is just south of the centre. Beyond the houses lie the River Aire, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and Yorkshire Water's treatment works, which occupy much of the old Esholt Hall estate.
How the van gets to Esholt
Station Road is the way in: it leaves the A6038 Hollins Hill and runs down to Main Street, with Church Lane, Chapel Lane and Pullan Lane off it. Cunliffe Lane also meets the A6038, and Esholt Lane links to Chapel Lane. The Wharfedale railway line passes just north of the village over Esholt Viaduct, but the station closed in 1940; the nearest now are Baildon, Shipley, Guiseley and Apperley Bridge.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 15 to 30 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Is Esholt the real Emmerdale village?
It was the outdoor location from 1976 to 1996, before filming moved to a purpose-built set on the Harewood estate. The village pub kept the name The Woolpack, which it took during those years.
Why is Esholt in the Baildon ward if it joined Idle in 1937?
When Esholt's own parish was abolished in 1937, most of it, the village included, went into the parish of Idle in the County Borough of Bradford. Today its postcode, BD17 7RD, returns the Baildon ward of Bradford Council.
