Sandal: what to know before moving day
Sandal was a separate place for most of its history: it is in the Domesday Book, it was an urban district from 1894 to 1909, and the parish was only merged with Wakefield in 1925. St Helen's Church stands where the Domesday church was, and the Battle of Wakefield was fought in 1460 between the church and Sandal Castle. The castle, on a sandstone ridge above the Calder, is now a ruin with a car park and cafe.
Streets in the middle of Sandal include Castle Road, Manygates Lane, Pinfold Lane, Pinfold Grove, Magna Grove, Sandal Avenue, Roger Drive and Lovaine Grove, and Sandal Cliff, Sandal Hall Close and Walton Lane are in the area too. Sandal Castle VA Community Primary School, St Thomas a Becket Catholic Secondary School, the Methodist church, Sandal Cricket Club and The Castle pub are all useful markers. The private Wakefield Golf Club is at Sandal too.
Sandal and Agbrigg station, on the Wakefield Line, is on the north-east side of the suburb. It reopened in 1987 after thirty years closed, and has two trains an hour to Wakefield Westgate and Leeds, with hourly trains to Doncaster and Sheffield.
How the van gets to Sandal
Barnsley Road, the A61, is Sandal's main road, and Agbrigg Road (B6389) links it across to the A638 Doncaster Road. From Bradford the van comes into Wakefield by the A650 or the M1, crosses the river and heads south on the A61. For houses on the castle side, Castle Road and Manygates Lane are the turnings to name.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Why do older records call it Sandal Magna?
Sandal Magna is the old name of the parish, which covered 1,700 acres and was merged into Wakefield in 1925. Addresses usually just say Sandal, Wakefield, WF2, in the Wakefield South ward.
Can the van get close to houses near Sandal Castle?
Share the address and a picture of the road outside. The castle has its own car park, but for a house on a side road the driver needs to know where a 3.4m-long load space can stop.
