Crigglestone: what to know before moving day
The name joins a Primitive Welsh word for a hill with Old English for a settlement on a hill, and the village does sit up above the Calder valley. It was recorded as Crigeston in the Domesday Book. On 29 July 1941 an explosion at Crigglestone Colliery killed 21 men; since the 1970s the site has become an industrial estate on its western side, housing to the east and Betty Eastwood Park to the south.
In the village the map shows a Tesco Express, the working men's club, the village institute and the Methodist church, and Crigglestone St James CofE Primary Academy and Mackie Hill Junior and Infant School are both close. The parish has 20 listed buildings, mostly houses, farmhouses and farm buildings. How the van gets to Crigglestone
Durkar, junction 39 of the M1, is the motorway exit for the village, and from Bradford it is reached by the M606, the M62 east and then the M1 south. Denby Dale Road, the A636, heads west from the junction; turn up Hollin Lane for High Street or Blacker Lane for Cliff Road. Painthorpe Lane continues south-east through Painthorpe to Hall Green.
