Outwood: what to know before moving day
Mining shaped Outwood. The Deep Drop Colliery explosion killed 21 people in 1879, and Lofthouse Colliery, near today's station, closed in 1981 after the 1973 disaster; its site is now housing and a former golf course. In 1905 miners evicted at Kinsley camped at Outwood Hall Farm, off Victoria Street. The church of St Mary Magdalene dates from 1858.
Leeds Road runs through the middle, and the streets off it include Church Lane, Victoria Street, Ledger Lane, Moxon Street, Binks Street, Coach Road and Rook's Nest Road, and Bevin Crescent, Attlee Grove and Mountbatten Avenue on the estates. Outwood Grange Academy, with over 2,100 students, is one of the largest secondary schools in the country, and the primaries are Outwood Primary Academy Ledger Lane and Rooks Nest Academy. Outwood Park has football pitches and a crown green.
How the van gets to Outwood
Leeds Road, the A61, is the way in, from Wakefield to the south or Lofthouse to the north, and junction 41 of the M1 is close by. From Bradford the A650 runs to junction 41, then carries on towards Wakefield until it meets the A61, where the van turns north up Leeds Road.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Is Outwood station useful after a move?
It is unstaffed but has 130 free parking spaces and, Monday to Saturday, two trains an hour to Leeds and trains south to Wakefield Westgate, Doncaster and Sheffield. It reopened in 1988.
Lofthouse is next door and in Leeds. Is Outwood?
No. Outwood is an unparished part of the Wakefield district in the Stanley and Outwood East ward, though Lofthouse, just to the north, is in Leeds. Bins and council tax go through Wakefield.
