Alverthorpe: what to know before moving day
Mills built along the beck spun woollen and worsted yarn, and one still works: Bective Mills, now Sirdar Spinning, which makes hand-knitting wool and has been in Alverthorpe for over 200 years. The Talbot family made humbugs and mint imperials in a former rag mill with a landmark chimney until they sold the business in the mid-1960s. The old township had its town hall on Green Lane and a workhouse off Light Lane, both names still on the map.
St Paul's, a stone Commissioners' church of 1826, stands on the hill north of the village, and the streets around it include St Paul's Drive, St Paul's Walk, Armitage Road, Marion Avenue, Pacaholme Road, Geary Drive and Canning Avenue, plus Weavers Chase, Twill Close and Padgett Way. Alverthorpe St Paul's CofE School is the village primary, and Silcoates School sits on the border with Wrenthorpe. Between the two villages, 52 acres of meadows are a Local Nature Reserve.
How the van gets to Alverthorpe
Batley Road runs through Alverthorpe from Wakefield towards Batley, and the A638 Dewsbury Road is just over a kilometre to the south, meeting the M1 at junction 40 about 5 km away. From Bradford that gives two ways in: the M1 to junction 40 and back along the A638, or the A650 to Wakefield and out on Batley Road. Wrenthorpe Lane and Silcoates Lane link the village with Wrenthorpe.

It opened in 1872, passed to the LNER and then British Railways, and closed in April 1954, and the track, bridges and embankments have since been removed. The nearest stations now are in Wakefield and at Outwood.
